Here's a fascinating artifact - the top joint of the bass drone of a venerable Henderson Great Highland Bagpipe that was carried into battle in the Boer War, over one hundred years ago, by a member of a Scottish military family. The gouge was made by a bullet! This didn't disable the pipe, which still exists today in a private collection. The lower part was badly damaged much later on and the joint was replaced, but the original was kept because of the interesting scar. The present owner intends to restore this marvelous piece of history and mount it back onto the pipe. Perhaps echos of a ricocheting bullet will be heard in its sound! |
