This gorgeous and interesting stamp/souvenir sheet was very tough to track down (and expensive, too). It's a "chess stamp," which threw us off the scent for a while. The illustration, except of course for the modern overprinted material, is apparently from something called, in the Scott catalog, the "Great Manuscript of Heidelberg Songs, 13th cent." . More information on that document, and especially about any further bagpipe illustrations within it, would be welcome. The bagpipe itself is formidable. Quite a few very early illustrations contain pipes that are pretty much the inventions of the artists - that may be the case here, or perhaps this big pipe did once exist. This item is quite large - the sheet is five inches high. |
