~ Stamp No. 163: St Vincent & The Grenadines ~

A huge stamp showing the circa 1638 Jacob Jordaens painting "The Bean King." The piper is at the far right, partially obscured by people in the foreground and partially off-stage. Such devices are all too common, and may reflect the problems many artists have had in depicting a bapipe accurately in their art. Jordaens did include a carving at the chanter stock of the pipe - see detail, below.

Carvings such as the lion face seen in this detail sometimes adorn the chanter stocks of continental European bagpipes. Most commonly seen are goats' heads, on Eastern European pipes. Western European bagpipes rarely have features like this.
