We are pleased to be among the first to anounce the upcoming release of this important feature-length documentary film, Zampogna: The Soul of Southern Italy by David Marker. "Zampogna" is a generic term for a rich variety of wonderful Italian bagpipes which once were the predominant folk instruments of Southern Italy and which, while presently undergoing a revival in Italy and elsewhere, are nevertheless endangered species. We look forward to the release of Marker's film and will add a complete review here when that time comes. Meanwhile, there is a trailer to be seen here on YouTube. The photos on this page are screen shots from that trailer. Below are three more screen shots followed by a brief description by David Marker of his film.

Description by film maker David Marker: "Zampogna: The Soul of Southern Italy. A feature length documentary film about Southern Italian culture told through its indigenous folk music. The film focuses on how these traditions are dealing with the rapid changes in local economy and the homogenizing effect globalization has on local culture. Filmed by an Italian American rediscovering his family's roots, the film takes the viewer on an odyssey through remote regions in Sicily, Calabria, Campania and Molise introducing the people who carry on these ancient traditions that most Italian Americans are completely unaware of. The Zampogna - the Italian bagpipe is the physical manifestation of this culture, its music representing the spirit and vitality of the Southern Italian."

Pipers of all sorts, among many others, will surely enjoy this film and we here at The Universe of Bagpipes expect that it will play a major role in the ongoing efforts to keep the fabulous traditions it documents alive and thriving. ~ O.S., 2009
